The annexation of Sicily to the Kingdom of Italy
The risings of 1820/21, the Revolution of 1848 and the landing of Garibaldi and his Expedition of the Thousand on Palermo in 1860 bring to the annexation of Sicily to the Savoy State in 1861.
The salient points of this itinerary are Piazza Rivoluzione with the symbolic figure of Genio di Palermo (a statue), the so-called “buca della salvezza” (the salvation hole) in the Franciscan Cloister of Gancia , the Risorgimento Museum and the famous Massimo Theatre that was built in the period of the Unification of Italy to celebrate the victory of the ascendant bourgeoisie.
